Allergies occur when your immune system
reacts to a foreign substance (such as pollen, bee venom or pet dander), or a
food that doesn't cause a reaction in most people.
Your immune system produces substances known as antibodies. When you have
allergies, your immune system makes antibodies that identify a particular
allergen as harmful, even though it isn't. When you come into contact with the
allergen, your immune system's reaction can inflame your skin, sinuses, airways
or digestive system.
The severity of allergies varies from person to person and can range from minor
irritation to anaphylaxis (a potentially life-threatening emergency). While most
allergies can't be cured, treatments can help relieve your allergy symptoms.
Below are some herbal supplements which can reduce or lesson the symptoms of
allergies.

Quercetin with Bromelain Quercetin
is a plant flavonol from the flavonoid group of polyphenols. It is found in
many fruits, vegetables, leaves, and grains. Most studies have shown that quercetin
stabilizes the membranes of mast cells, and also reduces the release of preformed
histamine (chemicals your immune system makes).
The dose of quercetin is usually 400–600 mg one to three times daily,
between meals. Quercetin is not soluble in water. Bromelain, which is a protein-digesting enzyme extracted
from pineapples, increases
the absorption of Quercetin. Therefore, Quercetin is typically sold blended
with
one, or both of the additives.
|
Research reports that Quercetin can have
anti-allergic and antihistamine properties. In one animal study,
researchers found that Quercetin could reduce the respiratory effects of
allergies in mice, by lowering airway inflammation.
Taking supplements of Quercetin will work
better in the treatment of allergies than eating foods alone which contain
it. This is because foods have significantly lower levels of the flavonoid.
Quercetin is generally safe for most people.
Research suggests that adding Quercetin to
the diet may help to relieve allergy symptoms.

Stinging Nettle Root Extract
Stinging Nettle is a plant which grows across North America in River
Banks, Farm Fields, and along Roadsides. The root and above ground parts
are used as medicine. Stinging nettle is a popular treatment for
seasonal allergies. Scientists are not yet sure how it has this effect,
though some suggest it is because the nettle can reduce allergy-related
inflammation in the body.
Seasonal allergies occur when a substance such as pollen triggers the body
to produce histamine. Histamine is what causes the characteristic symptoms
of allergies, including inflammation, itching, and hives.
According to some research, Stinging Nettle Root Extract may disrupt the
allergy process by inhibiting the body's histamine production and related
inflammation.
Stinging Nettle Root Extract may also affect the sneezing and itching of
hay fever. It also reduces the amount of histamine
the body releases from mast cells in response to allergens.
